The test begins with one section of analytical writing, which consists of two 30-minute long tasks. A 10-minute break occurs after the third section. The computer-delivered GRE consists of six sections, spanning three hours and 45 minutes. The verbal and quantitative reasoning sections are not administered in any order. After a 10-minute break, the GRE proceeds with either two 35-minute sections of verbal reasoning, or two 40-minute sections of quantitative reasoning. That said, if you are applying to a graduate school with rolling admission, you'll want to have your GRE done early to maximize your chances of being accepted. Your test results are valid for up to five years, so don't plan too far in advance. This allows for enough time to retake the exam if necessary.
